Fully funded United Nations human rights Fellowship Programme


The United Nations Human rights Fellowship Programmes provide students or youth with intensive learning opportunities on international human rights mechanisms and standards. There are six programmes aimed at strengthening capacity of specific groups or individuals in human rights work.


The Fellowship Programmes involves:

1. Fellowship Programme for People of African Descent: it is a 3 weeks training for African youths about the rights of people of African descent from the diaspora, Recipients includes People of African descent

2. Indigenous Fellowship Programme: It is the training of youth to so different issues dealing with human rights issue in particular for indigenous representatives, Recipients includes Indigenous peoples

3. Trust Fund Fellowship for LDCs/SIDS: it is a Three-month work placements for government officials from Least Developed Countries or small Island and Developing States, Recipients includes Government officials from LDCs/SIDS

4. Minorities Fellowship Programme: Training for human rights and minority rights defenders, Recipients includes Human rights/Minority rights defenders

5. OHCHR Humanitarian Funds Fellowship: Long-term fellowship for civil society organizations, recipients includes Staff/Affiliated members of human rights organizations

6. National Human Rights Institutions Fellowship: Understanding international human rights system, recipients includes staff of "A" status national human rights institutions


The Regional Course is scheduled to be held in person at the facilities of the ECA in Addis Ababa, from 20 February to 14 March 2025 and will be conducted in English. The course will accommodate up to 30 participants, including a limited number of spaces for self-funded participants.

Eligibility criteria for United Nations Regional Course fellowship programme 

  • Candidates must have a legal background with former professional experience in the field of international law.
  • Candidates must also be excellent and fluent in English language in which the Course is offered. 
  • Selected candidates are required to certify that they are able to attend the course in its entirety. 
  • Candidates must be from Member States of the United Nations which are also members of the African Group.
